Born on May 22, 1622, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, Louis de Buade de Frontenac was a prominent Franco-Canadian statesman, governor, and military officer.
From 1635, he served in the Dutch army under Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, participating in campaigns in the Netherlands and Italy until the signing of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. He rose to the rank of brigadier general and returned to Paris after the war.
