Smitty Gatlin Trio (1966-1972)
Former Oak Ridge Boys lead singer, Smitty Gatlin, formed the Smitty Gatlin Trio in 1966. At the time, Gatlin was also serving as music director at the First Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.
The trio released several albums on the Skylite label featuring future JD Sumner And The Stamps Quartet tenor Bill Baize and baritone Bill Monroe in addition to Gatlin.
In 1969, Gatlin returned to full-time singing with a group billed as the Smitty Gatlin Singers.
Born and reared in Pulaski, Tennessee, Smitty Gatlin became one of the smoothest and best-loved lead singers in Southern Gospel by the mids.
The name soon reverted back to the more established Smitty Gatlin Trio. The group name was retired in 1972 after Gatlin's death at the age of 37.
