Beliau merupakan penyair angkatan tahun 1945. Sastrawan ini lahir pada tanggal 30 Agustus 1927di Padang Panjang, Sumatra Barat dan beliau wafat di Jakarta pada April tahun 1995.

Ayahnya bernama Moh. Apin sedangkan ibunya bernama Siti Khamelah.

Rivai Apin adalah anak ketiga dari lima bersaudara, yakni Mochtar Apin (pelukis), Azwar Apin (penerbang), Rivai Apin, Yuliar Apin, dan Safrial Apin.

Rivai Apin juga menjadi salah satu personil dalam tiga serangkai penyair Indonesia.

Bersama dengan dua sastrawan lain yakni Chairil Anwar dan Asrul Sani, beliau ikut serta memberikan napas baru dunia kesusastraan Indonesia melalui buku kumpulan puisi Tiga Menguak Takdir.
